Detailed Description
The Machine — What a Bucket Wheel Stacker Reclaimer Does
A bucket wheel stacker reclaimer is one of the largest mobile industrial machines. It operates in bulk material stockyards — coal terminals, iron ore ports, bauxite mines — continuously moving, digging, and transferring material at rates up to 10 000+ tonnes per hour.
The machine combines three functions in one structure:
- Bucket wheel: A large rotating wheel (10–20 m diameter) with multiple buckets that excavates material from stockpiles
- Stacker function: A long boom conveyor that deposits material to build stockpiles
- Reclaimer function: The bucket wheel digs into stockpiles and transfers material to the yard conveyor system
Three Cable Types — Three Machine Functions
| Machine Function | Cable Type | Voltage | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Main power feed | MV reeling cable (motorized drum) | 3.6/6 kV or 6/10 kV | High-power 1–2+ MW, up to 400 mm², long travel on drum |
| Bucket wheel drive | LV reeling or festoon cable | 0.6/1 kV | Wheel motor power, combined slewing and luffing control |
| Boom conveyor control | Flat festoon or reeling cable | 300/500 V | Conveyor start/stop, belt tracking, emergency stops |
| Travel drive | LV reeling cable | 0.6/1 kV | Long-travel rail-mounted machine movement |
Modern machines integrate fiber optic for the CMS (Condition Monitoring System) — bearing temperatures, vibration, belt alignment, and production data all transmitted to the central control room.
Abrasive Environment — The #1 Design Challenge
Bulk material stockyards are extremely abrasive. Coal dust, iron ore fines, and bauxite particles are abrasive in themselves — and the constant movement of the machine stirs them into the air. The cable jacket must survive:
- Airborne particulate abrasion: Fine dust settles on the cable and acts as a grinding paste during reeling
- Material spill contact: Spilled material from the bucket wheel or conveyor contacts the cable on the drum
- Wind-driven particle erosion: In open stockyards, wind accelerates dust particles against the cable surface
- Moisture + particulate = slurry: Rain combines with dust to form an abrasive slurry that accelerates jacket wear
Fiber Optic — The Modern Requirement for Bulk Handling
All new bucket wheel stacker reclaimers include fiber optic in the main power cable. The fibers carry:
- Vibration monitoring: Accelerometers on the bucket wheel drive gearbox — detecting bearing degradation before failure
- Thermal imaging: Real-time temperature of motor windings, conveyor rollers, and hydraulic systems
- Belt tracking and alignment: Laser or camera-based belt position monitoring
- Production data: Tonnage, material type, stockpile inventory — integrated with the terminal management system
Why Choose Yichi Cable Bucket Wheel Reclaimer?
- Bulk handling application experience: We understand the difference between stacker and reclaimer cable demands — and engineer accordingly
- MSHA certified CR jacket: Mining-grade neoprene for North American and Australian mining operations
- Fiber optic integration: In-house capability means the fiber elements are part of the cable manufacturing process — not an aftermarket addition
- Travel distance engineering: For machines with 100+ m travel, we calculate the tensile reinforcement for the full cable weight on the drum — no underestimation
- Abrasion-optimized jacket: PUR or CR with surface finish options (smooth, ribbed) matched to your stockyard material and climate
