Detailed Description
LHD — The Underground Workhorse
A Load Haul Dump (LHD) machine is the most common piece of mobile equipment in underground mining. It scoops blasted rock (muck) from the tunnel face, hauls it to an ore pass or truck loading point, and dumps it — then reverses and repeats. One complete cycle typically takes 2–5 minutes, repeated hundreds of times per shift.
The trailing cable follows the machine through the entire cycle — dragged along the tunnel floor, around corners, through puddles of water and drilling mud, and squeezed between the machine and the tunnel wall during tight maneuvers.
The cable's failure mode is predictable: jacket wear from tunnel wall abrasion, followed by water ingress, followed by ground fault. An LHD cable replacement underground is a major operation — the tunnel must be cleared, the cable pulled by another machine, and the splice/connection made in a confined, poorly lit space.
LHD Cable vs Surface Mining Cable
| Surface Mining Drag Cable | LHD Underground Cable | |
|---|---|---|
| Environment | Open pit — sun, rain, rock | Underground — dark, wet, confined |
| Motion | Linear trailing | Reversing, tight turns, wall contact |
| Bend radius | Large (open floor) | Tight (tunnel corners, machine articulation) |
| Visibility | Yellow for daytime | Yellow + reflective stripe for headlamp visibility |
| Water | Occasional (rain) | Constant (groundwater, drilling water) |
| Length | 200–500 m | 50–150 m (tunnel-limited) |
| Replacement access | Crane — open pit | Confined space — difficult |
The LHD cable is more flexible, shorter, and designed for tight reversing bends — not long linear dragging. The underground environment adds water, confined spaces, and the need for high-visibility materials that work under artificial lighting.
Reversing — The LHD-Specific Stress
An LHD machine reverses approximately 50% of its operating time — backing up from the dump point to the loading point. Each reversal means the cable changes direction, often bending sharply as the machine articulates.
The short-lay flexible stranding and thicker CR/CSPE jacket are specifically designed for this reversing stress — a standard surface mining drag cable would fatigue and crack at the reversal points within a fraction of the LHD cable's service life.
Why Choose Yichi LHD Scraper Cable?
- Underground-specific design: More flexible than surface mining cable, designed for reversing and tight turns
- MSHA certified with ground check: Standard on every LHD cable — not an option
- Reflective stripe: Factory-applied reflective stripe on yellow jacket — visible under headlamp illumination underground
- Moisture-sealed construction: EPR insulation + sealed jacket compounds — prevents water ingress in wet underground conditions
