Detailed Description

The TBM Trailing Cable — Powering Kilometers of Tunnel

A tunnel boring machine advances through rock or soil at 5–50 meters per day, continuously pushing forward for months or years. The machine's power, control, and communication all flow through a single trailing cable that extends from the tunnel portal to the moving machine — sometimes over 1000 meters.

The cable must:

  • Deliver 1–10+ MW at 3.6–15 kV through 200–1000+ m of cable
  • Survive being dragged through water, mud, bentonite slurry, and rock dust
  • Withstand occasional physical contact with the tunnel wall and support installations
  • Carry the full tensile load of its own weight — a 1000 m TBM cable weighing 15–25 kg/m creates 15–25 tonnes of tension at the reel
  • Provide uninterrupted fiber optic communication for TBM guidance systems, cutterhead condition monitoring, and conveyor control
This is not a cable you replace mid-tunnel if it fails.

TBM Types — Different Machines, Same Cable Demands

TBM TypeGround ConditionCable EnvironmentSpecial Requirement
Hard-rock (open gripper)Solid rock, dry to wetWater, rock dust, occasional falling rockHigh tensile for long advance
EPB (earth pressure balance)Soft ground, wetBentonite foam, groundwater, soil slurryWater-blocked construction essential
Slurry TBMUnder river, saturated soilPressurized bentonite slurry, high humidityStainless steel tensile + sealed jacket
MicrotunnelingVarious, small diameterConfined space, remote operationCompact OD, integrated fiber

All types share the same fundamental requirement: the cable must survive the entire tunnel drive without replacement.

Fiber Optic — The TBM's Nervous System

Modern TBM guidance systems depend on real-time data from multiple sensors distributed across the machine. Fiber optic cables carry:

  • Guidance data: Laser theodolite position, inclination, and roll — millimeter-level precision over kilometers
  • Cutterhead monitoring: Individual disc cutter wear, temperature, and vibration — predictive maintenance
  • Ring building data: Segment erector position and concrete pressure — tunnel lining quality
  • Conveyor control: Belt speed, tension, and alignment — continuous muck removal
  • Atmosphere monitoring: Methane, CO, dust concentration — safety-critical in gassy ground
The fibers are integrated into the cable core in a gel-filled stainless steel loose tube — the only construction that provides the crush resistance and hydrogen barrier needed for TBM environments where the cable may be temporarily buried in muck or grout.

Why Choose Yichi TBM Cable?

  • 100 % PD tested at 2 U₀: Every meter of MV cable is partial discharge tested — a PD failure 800 m into a 1000 m cable means scrapping the entire cable
  • Tensile engineered for full advance: We calculate the steel core cross-section for your maximum tunnel length — not a standard catalog size
  • Fiber optic integration: In-house fiber cabling — tested for attenuation before and after cable manufacturing
  • Water-blocked construction: For EPB and slurry TBMs — swellable tapes and yarns prevent longitudinal water migration
  • ATEX configurations: Methane-rated for gassy ground — Zone 1/2 certification available
