Detailed Description
Reel Cable vs Reeling Cable — What's the Difference?
The distinction matters for selecting the right product:
| PUR Reel Cable (This Product) | PUR Reeling Cable (Heavy Duty) | |
|---|---|---|
| Application | Workshop, portable, utility reels | Industrial cranes, mining, marine |
| Typical length | 5–30 m | 50–500 m |
| Cross-section range | 0.75–6 mm² | 1.5–150 mm² |
| Tensile reinforcement | Not required (short, light cable) | Steel wire or Kevlar (mandatory) |
| D/d ratio | 12:1 minimum | 10:1 minimum (15:1 recommended) |
| Reel type | Spring-driven or light motorized | Motorized, high-torque |
| Retraction cycles | >50 000 | >100 000–300 000 |
| Jacket focus | Flexibility + chemical resistance | Compression + abrasion resistance |
| Cost | Lower — no steel reinforcement | Higher — steel core construction |
Think of this as the cable that powers the retractable work light above your workbench — not the cable that powers a 50-ton container crane. Both use PUR; the engineering is different because the application is different.
Why PUR for Workshop and Portable Reels?
Workshop reels face their own unique challenges:
- Constant handling: Cables are pulled out and retracted dozens of times per day — PVC jackets become stiff and kinked within months. PUR stays flexible and smooth
- Floor contact: The cable drags across workshop floors covered in oil, coolant, metal chips, and debris. PUR's abrasion and chemical resistance survive this; PVC does not
- Cold workshops: Unheated service bays drop below freezing in winter. PVC cables become rigid and refuse to retract. PUR retracts normally at -30°C
- Enclosed space safety: A workshop fire with PVC cables releases toxic hydrogen chloride gas. PUR is halogen-free — no corrosive or toxic combustion gases
- Chemical splash: Brake fluid, diesel, degreasers — common in any workshop. PUR resists them all; PVC absorbs and degrades
Spring Reel Compatibility — Less Force, Longer Life
A spring-driven reel has a finite retraction force — the spring must overcome the cable's weight and stiffness to pull it back onto the drum. A stiff, heavy cable requires higher spring tension, which:
- Increases wear on the reel mechanism
- Makes the cable harder to pull out (user frustration)
- Causes the cable to snap back dangerously if released
- Lower spring tension → easier pull-out, safer retraction
- Less mechanism wear → longer reel life
- More consistent retraction → cable seats properly on drum every time
Why Choose Yichi Cable PUR Reel?
- Reel-optimized jacket hardness: Shore 85–90 A — firm enough for abrasion resistance, soft enough for easy retraction on spring reels. Not the 92–95 A wear-resistant grade used for heavy industrial reeling — that would fight the spring
- Smooth surface finish: Our PUR jacket is extruded with a controlled smooth finish — minimizes friction against adjacent cable turns during spooling. No "sticky" surface that causes uneven layering
- OEM reel integration: We supply bulk cable on spools for reel manufacturers and system integrators with custom printing, color coding, and packaging
- Pre-assembled reel assemblies: Complete reel + cable + molded connector assemblies available — tested and ready to install
