Detailed Description
Mobile Crane Reels — Different from Fixed Crane Reels
A fixed gantry crane operates in one location, 24/7, with predictable cycles and known environmental conditions. A mobile tire-mounted crane operates in a fundamentally different way:
| Fixed Gantry Crane Reel | Mobile Crane Reel | |
|---|---|---|
| Power source | 3.3–10 kV shore power | Onboard diesel engine — cable is auxiliary, not main power |
| Voltage | 0.6/1 kV to 6/10 kV | 300/500 V (control/auxiliary only) |
| Cable weight | Heavy (5–10 kg/m) | Light (0.2–1.0 kg/m) |
| Reel type | Motorized drum (high torque) | Spring-driven or light motorized |
| Cycle frequency | 100+ cycles/day continuous | 10–50 cycles/day intermittent |
| Environment | Fixed marine/port exposure | Variable — highway, construction site, quarry, port |
| Vibration | None beyond crane motion | Road vibration during transport between sites |
| Duty cycle | 24/7 continuous | Intermittent — deployed when working, retracted when traveling |
The mobile crane reel cable carries control signals and auxiliary power — load moment indicator, anemometer (wind speed), hook block controls, and rotating hook/grab power. It does NOT carry main crane power — that comes from the onboard diesel engine.
Key Requirements for Mobile Crane Reel Cables
1. Spring Reel Compatibility
Spring-driven reels have limited retraction torque. A heavy, stiff cable will not retract fully — the spring stalls before the cable is fully wound. Mobile crane cables are specifically designed to be lightweight (minimal copper and jacket weight) and flexible (low bending force). Every gram of cable weight reduces available spring torque for retraction.
2. Anti-Twist Stranding
A cable that develops "coiling memory" on a spring reel will:
- Fail to retract smoothly — the cable fights the spring
- Create loose loops that catch on the reel housing
- Eventually tangle, requiring manual intervention
3. Road Vibration Survival
Mobile cranes travel between job sites on public roads. The cable on its reel experiences hours of road vibration — a stress that does not exist for fixed cranes. The core assembly must remain stable under sustained vibration without individual cores migrating or insulation abrading.
4. Variable Environmental Exposure
One day the crane works in a clean warehouse. The next day on a muddy construction site. The next week at a coastal port. The cable jacket must handle everything — PUR is the default choice because it handles oil, UV, cold, abrasion, and moisture equally well.
Configurations by Crane Function
| Function | Typical Cores | Cross-Section | Reel Type | Cable Length |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| LMI (Load Moment Indicator) | 4–8 cores | 0.5 mm² | Spring reel | 5–20 m |
| Anemometer (wind speed) | 2–4 cores | 0.5 mm² | Spring reel | 5–15 m |
| Hook block control | 8–18 cores | 0.5–1.0 mm² | Spring reel | 10–30 m |
| Rotating hook power | 3–5 cores | 1.5–2.5 mm² | Motorized reel | 10–30 m |
| Grab/magnet (below-hook) | 3–5 cores + 2–4 control | 1.5–4 mm² | Motorized reel | 15–40 m |
LMI and anemometer cables are typically dedicated small-core-count reels. Hook block control combines multiple functions in a single multi-core cable.
PUR vs NBR-PVC for Mobile Cranes
| Condition | Choose PUR | Choose NBR-PVC |
|---|---|---|
| All-weather outdoor use (sun, rain, cold) | ✅ | ❌ |
| Highway-legal crane (road travel) | ✅ — handles vibration better | ⚠️ — acceptable with covered reel |
| Construction/quarry site (mud, dust) | ✅ — easy to clean | ⚠️ — dust adheres to rubber surface |
| Coastal/port operation | ✅ — seawater resistant | ⚠️ — moderate |
| Cost-sensitive, covered storage | ❌ Over-specified | ✅ |
| Cold climate (< -15°C) | ✅ — -40°C flexible | ❌ — stiffens at -15°C |
| Indoor/city only | ⚠️ — works but over-specified | ✅ |
Why Choose Yichi Cable Mobile Crane Reel?
- Spring reel optimization: Our cable weight and flexibility are designed for spring reel retraction — we calculate the required spring torque for your reel diameter and cable length
- Anti-twist stranding standard: Every mobile crane cable uses short-lay anti-twist stranding — prevents the coiling memory that is the #1 cause of spring reel retraction failure
- Crane OEM configurations: We supply to major mobile crane manufacturers — our cables match their LMI, anemometer, and hook control pinouts
- Lightweight PUR jacket: Our PUR compound is formulated for low density without sacrificing abrasion resistance — less weight = better spring reel performance
