Cables for EV Charging, Solar and Wind Power Systems
Renewable and EV installations share a common problem: the cable is outdoors for its whole life, and it is often flexed rather than fixed. UV exposure, ozone, wide temperature swings and, at a charging station, constant handling by users all attack the jacket rather than the conductors. Products in this sector are therefore specified around jacket compound and temperature rating as much as around current.
Charging cable adds a mechanical duty that no other power cable has — it is picked up, dragged across concrete and re-coiled many times a day. That is why charging cable and charging station internal wiring are specified separately, even though both sit in the same installation.
What decides the cable in this application
Four factors do most of the work. Getting these right narrows the choice to a small number of constructions, and each one appears in the specification table of the cable type you select.
Continuous outdoor exposure ages the jacket
UV, ozone and temperature cycling degrade a jacket that was only intended for indoor use. Solar and wind cables are specified with outdoor-rated compounds and tested against UV exposure.
Charging cable is handled daily by users
A charging cable is dragged, dropped and re-coiled, so flex life and abrasion resistance matter alongside the electrical rating. This is a different duty from fixed station wiring.
Operating temperature affects current rating
A cable on a rooftop array or inside a turbine nacelle sits at elevated ambient temperature, which reduces the current it can carry. Temperature rating is therefore part of the ampacity calculation.
Battery and DC systems bring their own voltage class
Battery interconnect and DC link cabling operate at voltage classes and with insulation requirements that differ from AC distribution. The voltage class has to be specified explicitly.

Frequently asked questions
What is different about EV charging cable compared with normal power cable?
It is handled. The cable is picked up, dragged and re-coiled many times a day, so flex life and abrasion resistance are specified alongside the electrical rating. Internal wiring inside the charging station is a separate, largely fixed duty and is specified separately.
Why do solar and wind cables need specific jacket compounds?
Because they are outdoors for their whole service life and see UV, ozone and wide temperature swings. An indoor-rated jacket ages quickly in those conditions. Outdoor-rated compounds and UV testing are part of the renewable energy cable specification.
Does ambient temperature change the current a cable can carry?
Yes. Ampacity ratings assume a reference ambient temperature; a cable on a hot rooftop or inside a nacelle must be derated for the higher ambient. Give us the site temperature and we will confirm the corrected rating.
Can one cable serve a battery storage system?
Battery interconnect and DC link cabling has its own voltage class and insulation requirements, and it is usually specified as a distinct item from the AC side of the installation. Tell us the DC voltage and current and we will confirm the construction.
Need the cable confirmed against your machine?
Send the duty, the environment and the electrical data. Our engineering team will confirm the construction, the standards it meets, and the price — including custom builds where a catalogue type does not fit.
