Cables for Industrial Robots, Manipulators and Automation Cells

A robot cable fails for a different reason than any other cable on the factory floor. The wrist axes rotate continuously, so the cable is loaded in torsion — twisting — rather than bending. A cable without a torsion-rated stranding pattern fails at the conductors once the wrist starts rotating, no matter how flexible it is in a bending test.

Torsion rating is quoted as an angle per metre of cable, and useful life is measured in hundreds of thousands to millions of torsion cycles. Beyond the wrist, an automation cell needs servo and feedback cables that keep the encoder signal clean at the drive, which is why shielded pairs and an overall braid appear in the same specification.

What decides the cable in this application

Four factors do most of the work. Getting these right narrows the choice to a small number of constructions, and each one appears in the specification table of the cable type you select.

Torsion is a different failure mode from bending

Torsion-rated cable uses an SZ stranding pattern with anti-torsion fillers so individual conductors do not spiral. Cable rated only for alternate bending will fail at the wrist within a short operating period.

The dress pack has to combine several cable types

A robot arm typically needs motor power, encoder feedback, and often tool signals, air or bus wiring along the same route. Composite dress pack cable replaces several separate cables with one routed assembly.

Welding and paint cells add spatter and solvent

PUR jackets are chosen for robot cable because they resist oil, coolant, weld spatter and UV, where a PVC jacket would harden and crack in that environment.

Encoder signal integrity limits positioning accuracy

Feedback pairs need individual foil shielding with a drain wire plus overall braid. Without that, drive noise couples into the encoder signal and shows up as positioning error rather than as an obvious fault.

Frequently asked questions

What does torsion-rated mean for a robot cable?

It means the cable is built for continuous twisting at a stated angle per metre, using an SZ stranding pattern with anti-torsion filler elements, and tested beyond a defined number of torsion cycles. A cable without that stranding fails at the conductors once the wrist starts rotating, however flexible it is in a bending test.

Can one cable replace separate power, signal and data cables on a robot arm?

Yes. Composite dress pack cable integrates motor power cores, individually shielded signal pairs and data or bus elements in a single jacketed assembly. That replaces several separate cables, simplifies routing through the arm and reduces the number of terminations.

Which bus protocols can be built into robot and automation cable?

CAT5e, CAT6a, PROFINET, EtherCAT and CAN bus twisted pairs at defined characteristic impedance. Pairs are individually foil-shielded with a drain wire plus an overall tinned copper braid for drive environments.

Why is PUR used for robot cable jackets?

PUR resists oil and coolant, resists weld spatter, and is UV-stable, which covers welding, paint and machine-tending cells. A PVC jacket in those conditions hardens and cracks well before the conductors reach their flex life.
