Detailed Description
Shipyard Portal Crane — Different from Container Gantry Crane
| Container Gantry (STS/RTG) | Shipyard Portal Crane | |
|---|---|---|
| Lift capacity | 40–65 tons (containers) | 100–1 000+ tons (ship blocks) |
| Lift height | 30–55 m | 50–100+ m |
| Main hoist power | 1–2 MW | 2–8+ MW |
| Cable weight | 8–15 kg/m | 15–40 kg/m |
| Environment | Port — salt, sun, wind | Shipyard — salt, welding fumes, blasting grit, paint overspray |
| Cycles | 100+/day | 5–20/day (heavy, slow lifts) |
| Certification | DNV GL common | DNV GL/ABS/Lloyds mandatory for most projects |
The shipyard portal crane cable is designed for extreme weight, not extreme cycle frequency. A 400 mm² MV cable on a 100 m lift height weighs 2–4 tonnes — the tensile core must support this weight continuously, not just during peak acceleration.
Shipyard Environment — Three Unique Challenges
1. Welding Fume and Spatter
Shipyard portal cranes operate above active welding stations. The cable jacket is exposed to welding fume (metal oxide particles — conductive when deposited on insulation surfaces) and occasional weld spatter (molten metal droplets that can burn through thin jackets).
Cable requirement: Thick jacket (2.5–3.0 mm minimum), CR for self-extinguishing around hot work, or PUR for spatter resistance (higher melting point than PVC).2. Abrasive Blasting Grit
Ship blocks are abrasive-blasted before painting. The blasting grit (copper slag, steel grit, or garnet) becomes airborne and settles on everything — including the crane cable. This grit acts as an aggressive abrasive between cable turns on the drum.
Cable requirement: PUR jacket with Taber ≤5 mg, ribbed surface to prevent grit accumulation in drum grooves, regular cleaning protocol during blasting operations.3. Paint Overspray
Ship blocks receive multiple coating layers — primer, intermediate, anti-fouling. Paint overspray settles on crane cables. Some marine coatings contain solvents that can attack standard cable jackets.
Cable requirement: PUR jacket — chemically resistant to common marine paint solvents. CR is also resistant but may swell slightly with prolonged exposure. PVC degrades rapidly.Fiber Integration for Shipyard Cranes
Modern shipyard portal cranes integrate extensive condition monitoring:
- Load cell data: Each hook has multiple load cells — fiber transmits millivolt-level signals over 100+ m without electrical interference
- Anti-sway control: Active sway damping for large ship blocks requires low-latency data — fiber provides this
- Crane alignment: Multiple portal cranes working in tandem (tandem lift of very large blocks) require synchronized control — fiber ensures zero-delay communication between cranes
Why Choose Yichi Cable Portal Crane Reel?
- Shipyard-specific jacket formulation: CR and PUR grades tested for welding fume, blasting grit, and marine paint resistance — not generic industrial compounds
- DNV GL/ABS/Lloyds certified: Marine classification society approval available — mandatory for most shipyard crane projects
- Salt spray verified: IEC 60068-2-52 tested to 2 000+ hours — confirmed for coastal shipyard service life
- Heavy-lift tensile engineering: We calculate the tensile core for the full cable weight at maximum lift height — not the average
- ATEX configurations: Explosion-proof certified for shipyard zones where paint vapors create hazardous atmospheres
